The Seether's Louise

Fake Veruca Salt, i.e. Louise Post and friends playing loudly, is scheduled for the Plaza on Saturday, March 31st. With Charlotte Martin opening! I don't know about that combination, but I'll definitely be living out a high-school fantasy by "seeing Veruca Salt live" -- albeit in a massively diminished form.

The Feist presale landed me a pair of row 1 tickets (as well as a pair of row 3s). Not bad for a presale! And speaking of presales, guess who's got tickets to Sasquatch already?

And my favourite song of the first 1/6 of 2007 -- the title track of the new Bright Eyes EP, Four Winds. It's an upbeat, rambling Conor, spittin' dense, partisan lyrics on top of some country flava. And we get a sing-along chorus too! Fucking eh.

Alright, Still

I was pleasantly surprised to see Lily Allen's performance on SNL last Saturday. Going in, I was expecting a nervous little Brit with an underwhelming voice; she being so new and studio magic being so prevalent, I honestly thought she wouldn't sing that well. But defying my expectations, she pulled it off quite nicely in her North American TV debut.

She sounded nervous, of course, doing "Smile" and "LDN" in between above-average (SNL) skits -- but she also sounded great. So great, in fact, I was pretty sure she was lip-syncing until I realized she was not. Wow, I thought. She's really an underrated singer!

To me, the odds of her being a flash-in-the-pan have decreased significantly. Behind the cheeky marketing gimmick lies some substance -- at least she can sing. Yes, I know I love Alright, Still, but I couldn't figure out if I was digging the artist or the production team behind the artist. Now, at least I know she's not just a great studio creation.

Lily Allen: I look forward to more music from you in the coming years.

Sat Bits

Joss Whedon is no longer attached to the Wonder Woman movie. Details here, right from the horse's mouth. Well that kind of blows.

Speaking of which, the duo that brought us my 3rd favourite record of last year -- I am of course talking about The (fucking) Blow -- will soon be making their Vancouver debut. May 27th, kids. Richard's. Their MySpace says so!

So, a couple days ago, I downloaded what was supposedly a copy of Patty Griffin's new LP, Children Running Through. When my BT client finally finished assembling all the packets plucked from The Series of Tubes, I found that the zip file contained not the latest of Patty's offering, but rather a collection of old tracks. Then I was like: nice! What an interesting way of thwarting pirates (like myself)! Looks like I'll have to wait a few more days, which isn't a big deal (especially since I have a Neon Bible to munch on in the meantime.)
