No Harm Done
Apparently, the Blue deluxe re-issue doesn't come out in Canada for a few weeks. Ah well. I'm happily listening to Sarah Harmer's wonderful All of Our Names right now, so I can wait a couple weeks. It's got fewer up-tempo ditties than You Were Here (notable exception being the boppie first single, "Almost"), but it's no less great. My favourite, so far, has to be "Greeting Card Aisle." It floored me when I first heard it at Rock for Choice, and unlike other amazing live tunes that fail to deliver on a record (Chantal Kreviazuk’s "Lovin' in the Morning Light" comes to mind), it does not disappoint. I can't wait 'til it really sinks in!

My curling season ended with me skipping our team to a 7-0 defeat by the Whale. Mauling notwithstanding, I was proud of my Don Rumsfeld MOAB job that saved us two points on my last rock. 'Fall Fell In Love With a Girl
Tonight was supposed to be all about working on my marketing research project. Instead, my brain decided it was going to crap out on me midway. I reached a point when I was staring at the screen, completely unable to write anything even a quarter decent.
So I gave up. There was no use wasting my time when it was probably overworking and stress that has caused this crap-out in the first place. So instead of critiquing marketing and research problems, I knocked back some of the TV I've piled up (the stack was at 3 6-hour tapes and counting). The show I picked -- Wonderfalls -- was so worth my time.
If you read Ain't It Cool News, you've probably heard of the show. Let me tell you this: believe the hype. It's charming. It's witty, It's well-written. It's full of interesting characters. Basically, it's everything you want a show like this to be! Since it's executively produced by Mutant Enemy fave Tim Minear, how can you expect anything less? Hehe, but I haven't even mentioned the best part of the show yet....
For that, look no further than the protagonist Jaye Tyler, played by Canadian actress Caroline Dhavernas. If my brain were working tonight, I'd give you a detailed account on how absolutely amazing she is. For now, you'd just have to trust me. Errr.... on second thought, I think I'll give it the old college try:
*Ahem*. She brings the role to life, injecting humour and energy into every scene that she's in. Her style and delivery is just perfect for that slackerish, deliberately underachieving genius that the writers are going for. After seeing only two episodes of the show, I already can't imagine anybody else in the role. And she's cute too! I'd say a little bit of Jennifer Connelly, but younger and not as waif-y. And cuter too. If I had to sum her performance up in two words, I'd say "fucking brilliant."
So yeah. I think I've found a new TV crush. If Alexis Bledel/Rory Gilmore is my yin, then Caroline Dhavernas/Jaye Tyler is my yang. Where Rory is mostly polite, hardworking, and passive, Jaye is none of that -- in the best, funniest, and most charming sort of way. Hehe... I guess even my TV-fandom has to achieve some sort of internal balance :-)

Play Ball!
So, spring is just around the corner, and that means one thing -- baseball season! With that comes fantasy baseball, and last Sunday (at 9:00 am no less, ugh), I had the draft for one of the two teams I'm managing, The Old Pornographers. Who did I get? Here's a breakdown, complete with commentary:
1st Round: Nomar Garciaparra, Boston Red Sox, SS
Nomah! With the 10th overall pick, I grabbed the second best fantasy shortstop in the game. I like this pick. It gives me a top-of-the-line hitter in a relatively hitter-deprived position, AND I get to say "Nomah!" all season for legitimate reasons!
2nd Round: Pedro Martinez, Boston Red Sox, SP
Since Mark Prior, my number one ranked starter and steal of last year's draft, went 8th overall, I picked the next guy on my list, a certain ex-Expo I've had for the last couple of years. Barring injury, Pedro's a stud -- tonnes of K's, low WHIP, low ERA, very little walks, and a bag of wins if the bullpen could hold things together. Another Beantowner, yeah. I'm riding the Epstein train! (no crazy Koreans for me though).
3rd Round: Jason Giambi, New York Yankees, 1B
I needed another big bat, and I'm hoping the slimmed-down Giambi won't let me down. IIRC, I took Lance Berkman with my 3rd round pick last year, and that didn't turn out as well as I thought it would. Hopefully, Giambi could pull in 40 HRs and 110 RBIs in the middle of that stacked Yankees line-up.
4th Round: Andruw Jones, Atlanta Braves, OF
Instead of drafting for one of the weaker positions, I went for the best bat I can find in a position that I haven't filled already. With the departure of Gary Sheffield, I don't know if he can match his power and run production numbers from last year. With that said, the depleted Braves line up might force Bobby Cox to run him like he used to. We'll see what happen. I'm pretty sure he'll give me 30/100 at least.
5th Round: Luis Castillo, Florida Marlins, 2B
I might've drafted this one a little too high. The Marlins line up isn't what it was last year, and his SB numbers were down last year too. I hope he runs a little more this year.
6th Round: Kevin Brown, New York Yankees, SP
My first major risk of the draft. If I want one guy to stay healthy, it's him. With the Yankee bats behind him, a healthy Brown should be a fantasy dream, similar to what I expect from Pedro. Lets hope his old and withered body has at least one more year left.
7th Round: Jason Isringhausen, St. Louis Cardinals, RP
I need me some saves, and if I don't grab a closer here, I'll be left with the likes of Rocky Biddle and Matt Anderson. St. Louis has a good team, and he's healthy now, so I hope I can get 40 saves from him.
8th Round: Troy Glaus, Anaheim Angels, 3B
Welcome back, Troy! I had you for 3 of the last 4 years, and after going for Scott Rolen last year, you're back on my team! A healthy Troy will give me tonnes of power, and scooping him in the 8th was a nice little coupe.
9th Round: Matt Le Croy, Minnesota Twins, C
Haha. I got one of the "fake" catchers who qualify in this position! I had him a few years ago when he was supposed to break out. Then along came A.J. Pierzynski and back he went to the minors. Now, armed with the starting DH job, I hope he can help me out.
10th Round: Kevin Millwood, Philadelphia Phillies, SP
He didn't have a bad first year with the Phillies last year, but I'm hoping he'll be back to his 2002 form with the Braves, i.e. lower ERA and WHIP. He should do nicely as my number two starter.
11th Round: Torii Hunter, Minnesota Twins, OF
I think I picked him in the 4th or 5th last season because he stole a bunch of bases in 2002 in addition to hitting nearly 30 dingers and getting close to 100 RBIs. Last year was a bit disappointing, but he'll hopefully do better this year.
12th Round: Robb Nen, San Francisco Giants, RP
My 2nd risk. He should be ready to close by opening day, but when you miss an entire season, chances are you'll be rusty. Lets hope he bounces back to his previous, 1+ K/IP and 40+ saves form we're used to seeing.
13th Round: Geoff Jenkins, Milwaukee Brewers, OF
He's not Jeffery Hammonds, he's not Jeffery Hammonds. If he stays injury free -- and that's a big if -- he could do 35 HRs and 100+ RBIs. Here's hoping he plays a full season!
14th Round: Raul Ibanez, Seattle Mariners, OF
Hitting clean-up for the Mariners? Sign me up! No, I don't have a start spot for him, but I'm sure injury will give him a few games.
15th Round: Jeff Weaver, Los Angeles Dodgers, SP
3rd risk. Was the potential he showed as a Tiger just a flash in the pan? I hope getting out of the Bronze Zoo will get him his first 15-win season.
16th Round: Shigetoshi Hasegawa, Seattle Mariners, RP
All signs say that he'll be the setup man for Eddie Guardado in Seattle. That's fine with me, as I need holds too.
17th Round: Rocco Baldelli, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, OF
I can't believe he slipped this far! Apparently he bulked up over the winter, so lets hope he adds a few more HR without losing that great speed I drafted him for.
18th Round: John Thomson, Atlanta Braves, SP
I got me a sleeper here. He's in a good situation in Atlanta, and while I don't expect Greg Maddux numbers, I hope he can get 15 wins and keep his ERA below 4.00.
19th Round: Tomo Ohka, Montreal Expos, SP
Another solid middle-of-the-road starter, he's the Japanese guy who nobody seems to talk about. Again, I'm hoping for 2002-Tomo rather than 2003-Tomo.
20th Round: Jeremy Burnitz, Colorado Rockies, OF
Power hitter goes to Colorado? I've got a bench spot for ya! Think Preston Wilson, dude. And remember '97 when you stole 20 bases? Do that too!
21st Round: John Lackey, Anaheim Angels, SP
I like taking risks. C'mon! Win that job in the rotation! Aaron Sele is over the hill! Prove that the 2002 play-offs was no fluke!
22nd Round: Aaron Miles, Colorado Rockies, 2B
I've dropped him. I decided I need more pitching, so I picked up Justin Speier (Toronto Blue Jays, RP) instead. Whether Speier closes or sets up, he'll still bring me more value than Miles, even if he's gonna sit atop that Rockies line up.
23th Round: Joe Crede, Chicago White Sox, 3B
Just in case Glaus gets hurt again, I've got a young up-and-comer to back him up. I wanted Morgan Ensberg for this, actually, but Crede will do.
24th Round: Craig A. Wilson, Pittsburg Pirates, C/1B
Another fake catcher who'll get some decent playing time and hit a few dingers. It's always good to have trade bait like him in case one of the other teams' catcher gets injured (helloooooo, Pudge!).
25th Round: Marlon Byrd, Philadelphia Phillies, OF
I wanted to stash some sleepers, so it's either him or Jason Bay. I guess Marlon won out cos he's actually got a full season under his belt.
So that's my current lineup. Half of these guys will be gone by the end of the season, as I usually pluck a lot of guys off waviers. We'll see who sticks though.

Interview With the Ho
Blog interviews! If you want me to interview you, let me know in the comments section. I will then post five questions specifically for you here to answer back in your own blog. The following questions for me are from Val:
1. What is your most cherished item from a concert (free or purchased)? Why?
Wow. Opening with a hard one, eh? I would have to say.... the signed Sarah Slean set list. I had to be pushed to go get her squiggly, but I'm sure glad I did! While I don't necessarily cherish it as much, the set list I got from a Folk Implosions show was cool too, as it was written on the back of a paper plate.
2. Which artist/band do you think is not getting enough recognition?
I would like to say Death Cab, but they've been all over the O.C. recently. Let me instead say Weeping Tile, Sarah Harmer's old band. Since Sarah's solo career took off, WT has been an afterthought, but Cold Snap was a friggin' wonderful piece of Canadian indie rock, much better than any of the stuff that came from the much-celebrated Halifax scene of the early-to-mid 1990s.
3. What is your favourite episode of Saved by the Bell? Why?
Just one? Wow, lets see. The SAT one, Zack Attack, the murder mystery one, and the spaghetti sauce one... hmm.... lets say the spaghetti sauce one. I've always loved food on TV.
4. Who was your most favourite character on BtVS? Why?
Anya. The humour, the awkwardness, the beauty, the pizzazz -- she was a fine one, that cute little ex-vengeance demon. Now I'm sad because I remember her being chopped in half :-(
5. What do you like about curling?
The questions is, what's not to like? It's a sport that you don't have to be in good shape to play. It's competitive. You get to yell really loud for particular reason. And you get to say stuff like "I'm going to ram my rocks into the house to score," "plug that crack up nice and tight," and "slide it in there nice and smooth." Yeah, it's the sport of sports.

The Sickness
I'm so fucking sick right now. I got home at around 2 am after helping out at the SMA pub night (no drinking -- just ticket-selling and crowd-prodding), and got up around noon feeling like shit. The night before, I stretched my already blown-out voice to cheer on the bands on stage (since most of the crowd were to cool to clap), and I really paid for it the morning. It hurt to even talk, and nasty, thick phlegm plugged up everything you could imagine. After having below-average pho with my brother, I slept again for a few hours. Eh. I was still feeling really crappy when I got up, but since I've got shitloads of work to do, I have no choice but to soldier through it. Yup. Trooper.

Rock Me Like A Hurricane
About 15 minutes ago, I was suddenly hit with this massive food craving. I started chomping on everything in sight -- Chinese sugary square thingies, Ritz crackers, peanuts, peeled chestnuts, oranges, etc. And this was completely unprovoked too! One minute, I was working on my survey coding, and the next, I was shoving things down my throat as if I were preggers. This is the weirdest thing, and I can't say it has ever happened to me.

Not Many Asians at This Show Either
I don't think I have it in me to do a full review-thing on the Pedro the Lion show yesterday. We'll see what happens as I go along.
Early show at Richard's. Doors didn't open on time. No surprise there. P:ano opened and were very good, kinda Salteens-esque, with the girl-vocals sounding a bit like Katie Conley of The Sinking Ships/Holiday Flyer. The dude had moves like Ben Gibbard, and he sorta looked like Ross (but bigger). And the bassist -- I swear I've seen her somewhere before. Lisa apparently knew some of them -- they went to high school together or something? She had sent me their mp3s earlier, but they didn't sound this good. The next time I talk to her, I'll let her know her friends represented.
Ester Drang followed with a droning, neo-shoegaze, and at times slowcore set. They had good chops and were doing some interesting stuff, but the nature of the music made me doze off a few times. I swear, if I were less tired, I would've been all over that. Instead, I drifted in and out of consciousness, almost falling over once. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing them open again; they'd be perfect table-setters for Low.
And then there was Pedro the Lion. This was, what, the 5th time I?ve seen them? Something like that. As Dave and co. were setting up, I got a peek at the set-list. I counted about 14 entries, a vast improvement from the barely 40-minute set they did the last time they were at Richards. They played mostly new ones, although they did throw in some of my faves like ?Penetration,? "Options," "Rapture," and "June 18th, 1976." The sound was great this time, as I could actually hear Dave's vocals loud and clear, unlike the last time they were here. During the question period, I got to ask Dave why they named the new album Achilles Heel. His answer was that it was the name they liked from a list that they came up with. Apparently, they liked it even more after seeing the artwork, which was done by the same guy who did the last Shins record. Cool.
Because of the time limit they were working with, they cranked songs out back to back with very little stoppage in between. They went through their entire set, plus a one-song encore ("Almost There"), in a little over an hour. Efficient. Like always, the band was tight, and Dave's singing was brill as well. Maybe I'll catch them again in Nashville in April when they open for Death Cab and Ben Kweller!
After the show, I met up with of the crazy kids from quiz bowl for some karaoke in honour of the burfday of the BD, dedicating Sweet Caroline to Mike in the SK. Despite, my sore throat, I soldiered through, even avoiding my usual comfort songs that I know I can pull off half-decently. Instead, I went for "fun" stuff that I don't know the tune or lyrics too. Yup -- queue me up some Hilary Duff, Beyonce, Fiddy, and Kelly Clarkson! You don't know the word butchered until you've heard me do So Yesterday, hehe. Afterwards, we hit Denny's for some post-singing eating. Mmmmm..... breakfast at 2 am.
Oh gees. I guess I wrote the whole thing. Ah well. Perhaps I'll slack off next time.

And Then She Showed Me Her Thong
Liz Phair was tonight, and no, she wasn't the one referenced in the heading.
Before the show, the speaker pumped out Hail to the Thief in shuffle order. I realized I haven't listened to that since the summer, which explains why I did "2+2=5" so poorly at karaoke last time. After that, they turned up some Postal Service, and I was lip-syncing through the entire thing while nursing my cream ale. Postal Service and a good beer... what more can you ask for?
Rachael Yamagata was up first. I didn't realize how short she was until she walked on stage, jeans under a striped dress with a frizzy green thing over it. Having only heard (and loved) one of her songs ("Worn Me Down"), I must say I was fairly impressed. That booming voice, those nice, long compositions -- the only one I can name drop here is Leona Naess, though I'd say Rachael is quite a bit more rock-out than Leona.
When her half-hour set was done, this not-unattractive-girl came barging through the crowd, a poster in hand. She had spirit, this one, and she really wanted Liz to sign it. Since Ms. Phair was nowhere to be seen, she just started talking to me. The next thing I knew, she was showing me her tattoo near her butt, in the process revealing her underwear. Hmmm. I can say that this is the first time someone has shown me her underwear in public. Anyway, watching her jump around being all enthused was entertaining. I guess working at a coffee place will get you permanently hyper!
Next was Patrick Park, who played with a drummer and a bassist. He looked like a cross between Andrew W.K. and that Doyle guy from Great Big Sea -- except he was good. In fact, he was so fucking impressive, I don't think he had one bad song in his set. Sonically, he's got that Rhett Miller-esque, alt-country pop thing down tight. Less sappy, I suppose, but both the twang and the hooks were clear and present. What a pleasant surprise!
Of course, the main event came after Patrick Park. Liz, walking out with one of those head-gear mics (*ugh*), wearing pink pants, green Eskimo boots, and a beige top that looked like a bra with a little more fabric. Gee. No wonder creepy old men who seem completely out of place dotted the crowd! Anyway, she started with a horrendous version of "Flower." I mean, I love Liz, despite what hipsters say, and I *love* Flower (how can you not with lines like "I want to fuck you like a dog / and take you home and make you like it"), but a full-on band rendition completely drowned out the intimacy and sparing honesty of the song. Ick.
Throughout the set, old songs were greeted with loud cheers, while the new ones got mostly lukewarm receptions. Personally, I went nuts over the old stuff, screaming my way through "6'1"", "The Divorce Song," "Polyester Bride", "Supernova," and the encores of "Stratford-on-Guy" and "Fuck and Run," while only swaying mildly through the new ones. Meh. It was more a gut thing than anything deliberate. If she had played "Little Digger," I would've been all over that.
Anyway, after the encore, I got Liz to give me her setlist. When she came out a little later, I even got her to sign it. Hehe. I love this shit. After that, I briefly chatted with Rachael Yamagata (debut LP out June 8th!) and Patrick Park and friends at the merch table. Since Rachael couldn't get her stuff across the border, I had to settle with only a Patrick Park CD. Sorry Val! No buttons! She promised to bring some next time, though.
Overall, it was a good show. The openers were fantastic, and Liz played most of my faves. The head-mic was cheesy, and her vocals weren't loud enough at times, but I'd see her again if/when she comes back, if only to hear "Fuck and Run." Oh! And did I mention that I saw more Asians there tonight than at any other show I've been to? Yeah, that's what I saw. I have no idea why, but the black-haired were everywhere tonight. Strange.

Still In Love
If I were less tired and not so completely swamped, I'd post about the great Stars/Young & Sexy show on Saturday or the good-yet-not-brilliant Exclaim! anniversary show yesterday featuring Broken Social Scene, The Stills, and Raising the Fawn. Wait a minute -- I've got five minutes. Let me sum them up in a couple of ill-conceived haikus:
Faux Brit Torq did Yorke
While Amy glowed all night long
Stars were out tonight
With no horns or girls
The Scene turned ordinary
But the bar stays up
