Oh, To Be Free
*Now* everything is done. With one last semi all-nighter down the tube, I'm ready to take a short break before hitting the books to study for my one and only exam. The first thing I did was watch a couple of downloaded episodes of what is probably the best show on the Food Network, A Cook's Tour hosted by the cool-ass Tony Bourdain. The first one was on LA where he ate at the giant donut place that we went to when we were down in LA, and the other one was one of the ones done in Japan. Man that was an awkward/shitty sentence! Must be all the crappy writing I've done over the last couple weeks... Anyway, he ate Edo-mae sushi and went to Tsujiki Fish Market. We went there last summer when we were in Japan, but the place was closed because of some going-home festival. Oban or something. Bah. It would've been cool for a sushi snob like me to see the real thing.
Anyway, tomorrow will be my first show in over a month, my only July show in fact -- Aimee Mann. My friend Aisling won tickets from the Georgia Straight, so I'll be going for free. Weeeee! I guess Chris, her boyfriend, didn't want to or couldn't go, so I'll happily sub in. She and Chris will be going to Japan for a year to teach English, so this could be the last time I'll see her for a while. Awww..... how sad. It'll be a great show though, so she'll bid Vancouver adieu with happy musical memories.
Oh yeah! And Big Brother! I'm friggin' PISSED that Dave got booted off! Not that I want to see Jack go, but Dave is probably the coolest guy in the house -- wicked funny and wicked crazy. Since he's gone, I'll be cheering for Jack (and of course Aly) from now on. The good news is, though, Aly got the Head of Household! YESSSSS!!! Cutie Aly will stick around for at least another couple weeks, and Man-troll (Dana) and Midget (Justin) are soooo going on the block on Friday. Even if one of them gets the veto, Asshole (Robert) or Tool (Jee) would likely take his/her place, meaning that one of the Man-troll/Three Stooges/Jun alliance will be out of there come next Wednesday. Wicked, eh? It's all about the HoH competition now.

Just When You Think It's Over
Hypothetical Someone: Say, Hanson, weren't you supposed to be at Erin McKeown tonight?
Me: Yeah, that was the plan, but here I am working on this group promo plan.
Hypothetical Someone: So how long has it been since your last show?
Me: More than a month. I'll definitely catch Aimee Mann on Thursday. I'm not missing that!
Hypothetical Someone: Oh, that's too bad. Hope you get some sleep though.
Me: Nope. Looks like I'll be watching the sunrise again! Yay all-nighters!

Amusement
I read an article in a Chinese magazine saying how the music industry in Hong Kong is going down the shitters. Hehe... I've been saying that for years! Some of these so-called performers that HK youth are worshipping make Britney and Xtina look like Lennon and McCartney (i.e. talented). They can't sing! They can't act! They can't do anything except suck (and not in the way Xtina does either, if you know what I mean)! All hype... hacks, the lot of them.
Anyhoo, I finally updated the freebie mp3 area of my website. It now features a new cut from Death Cab's yet-to-be released album, one that I've been listening to incessantly for the past few weeks. The song is called Expo '86, and I highly encourage you to grab it from me -- it's scrumptrillescent.

Watering Down
Diarrhea sucks. It caused to miss a wedding on Saturday and it made me go poo poo multiple times. I hate watery shit. Ick is right!
I've also been writing my political economy essay too. This is actually the first time I've been under the word limit, and I now have the unenviable task of putting in filler paragraphs. I mean, I've said what I think I needed to say to "prove" my thesis, and yet I'm expected to write more just to fulfill the requirement! I'm usually long-winded, so not having enough words has never been a problem. This is one of the few times I’ve been able to write succinctly, and they want me to water it down? Bastards.

Just a Little Bit
It'll be over in a week or so. After August 5th, I won't have to do anything for grades for over a month. I'll still owe Irwin that Canadian music project, but that's fun stuff; it's not like I'll be scouring ProQuest to find articles linking the Kyoto Protocol, Canada, and neo-liberalism. Man, I hope my paper doesn't suck too much. Anybody got any good articles on that, gimme a holla!
Oh. I'm so pissed that Alison is on the block on BB4! Crazy psycho-beeyatch Dana! Imma hate you!!

Back On Track
Wow. This might be the longest I've gone without doing a substantial update of my blog! Anyway, here's a review of what happened in the last week or so.
Where to start..... ok, well, the bane/purpose of my existence for the last couple weeks or so, my business plan for Ebrius and its fantastic product, the Liquor Mixer, has finally been handed in. My group worked until the morning light broke on Tuesday morning, and it wasn't until 8:00am until everything was printed, bounded, and all ready to go. Like I mentioned in my previous post, the sucker is 100 pages exactly and 25,000+ words. Yeah. Easily the biggest mofo I've ever handed in. In class, we were asked if we were attached to our biz plans, and without hesitation, my hand went straight up. Oh yeah, I get attached easily, and fuck if I ain't attached to it.
Anyway, now that it's all over, I can say that what started off in the worst possible way ended up being the best that it could've been. The engineers that Kenny and I worked with were fucking fantastic! They were smart, hard-working, and they could fucking write! The circumstances that are group came together were less than desirable, but the result was fan-bloody-tastic. Just hearing the dysfunctional stories coming from the other groups, I'm so glad things worked out for us.
So is it good? We'll, I think so. There were a bunch of things we thought of afterwards that could've made the plan better, but that's always going to happen. Now it's in the hands of the judges, so we'll see where we stand. There are some pretty strong groups in the mix, and if we were shortlisted and get into the top 3, I'd be satisfied. Anybody who's got a morbid interest to read such things, let me know and I'll hook you up.
I mean, despite its shortcomings, I can say that I'm proud of what we did. It's one of the few school-related things that I can say that about, probably because this wasn't something I took the "ROI" approach on; you know, when you just do the minimal amount of work to not totally embarrass yourself? Usually, that'll get me my A- or B+, sometimes even better, but I won't make that extra effort to get the sure A or A+ because I simply don't care. Anyway, this wasn't the case. I wanted to do well, regardless of effort. Well, it was spent, and I was (relatively) happy, but we'll see how well we do. I'm rarely satisfied with my own work anyway. And when I say rarely, I mean never.
Anyway, the final presentation for the project was in class today. We were up fourth, and we followed some pretty awesome presentations. Leanne and Sonia went up first, presenting their fitness watch slash heart rate monitor, and even though they didn't start preparing until last night, they absolutely tore the roof off of the place. They were unbelievably good! They covered every possible thing that I could think of in an overview-type sort of presentation, and they didn't miss a beat! Every bloody thing was covered, well too. Ok, so their financials were a bit shaky, but people eat that simulation/modelling stuff up like it's ambrosia, so they made out really well! I was talking to a few people afterwards, and they shared my opinion. Shit yo: they raised the bar pretty damn high. On Tuesday, they were telling me how their project wasn't up to snuff because of all the internal shit they had to deal with, but man, I really can't believe that after what I saw today. They told me they had written themselves out of the running for the prize, but I think they're as in it as any group.
Leah followed them up with her specialty wine store idea. She's actually going to start her business up, so unlike the rest of us, this isn't simply an academic exercise for her. That showed, as she gave another fantastic presentation: tonnes of details, in-depth analysis, and really professional slides. I know what she's capable of since I've worked with her in another class, and she brought it today. Damn. That's two awesome presentations in a row. A little hard to follow, eh?
Well, Albert's group did that, and while I didn't think it was on the same level as the previous two, it was still pretty strong. Their product was a collision warning system, and while I don't know how much demand there actually is, I wasn't the one who spent hours doing research, so what do I know. But yeah, that's three solid presentations to follow up, so what do I do? Choke. Yup. Choked the big one.
OK fine, it wasn't that bad, but I wasn't happy with what I did. Kenny did his part fine, but me, well, it could've been better. It didn't help that there was a 30-minute delay between our presentation and the group before that got me panicking the way only tha Ho can panic! You see, because we were going to run out of time had we stayed in our original class room, our prof Bob booked another room for us to present in. Well, when we got there, we found out there was a class in there. No big, so we went to the room next door. Empty. Good, so we started setting up. But wait. No computer, so we had to get AV down here pronto. The others in the class are getting restless. So we waited, but then we found out that there was a class there in about ten minutes. Well fuck me. So we had to move back to the other room since we couldn't use this one, and as it turns out, there was no computer in that room either. So much for booking things! Anyway, we gave AV a call again, but no answer. Shit. It looks like we might have to do it without our PowerPoint slides! So we began scrambling, me panicking and fretting like the little dipshit that I am, all the while trying to draw revenue and net income graphs on the overhead. Luckily, the computer guy and the computer go there just in time, and we got started a half an hour late. But at least we got started
So yeah, things didn't start off so well, huh? Not only was I running around, I had basically lost focus. When it came time to do the presentation, my mind was everywhere. I was unfocused, quick-tongued, and just not very good, at least in my opinion. I had this fucking awesome idea, a pitch if you will, that outlined the five preconditions that would make our product and company viable. I sorta was able to communicate that, but because of the short among of time I was given, I wasn't able to give enough evidence as to satisfy me. That said, I'm a very critical person, so maybe that's the probably. I was told afterwards that it wasn't so bad, but I guess my standards for myself are a little too high. In my opinion, I choked. I fucking Lori Kaned it.
See, now I'm depressed (no not really, just a figure of speech). I was going to write about how my car was broken into last Saturday at a parking lot downtown, or how I attempted to drink 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes at Mike's Welcome Back From Dawson party only to run out of beer at 90, or how I (drunkenly) sang the Cranberries' Linger and a bunch of Sarah Harmer songs afterwards, or the charades afterwards that included stuff like Josie and the Pussycats (guess how clues were given for *that*) and Xanadu, or how I sang/jumped/danced my way through Avril Lavigne's Complicated at a karaoke bar on Friday. Now I just don't feel like it.
Oh yeah, and Big Brother 4 this week: was that fucking awesome! Just that look on asshole Robert's face was totaly worth it. And other week with Erika, though at the expense of Michelle, will be cool. And Aly... oooooh... Aly.... my heart belongs to thee (in a superficial way).
Next show I'll try to get to: Erin McKeown on Tuesday. I hope I'll have time to spare, BUS 448 willing.

You know that political economy essay that I've been ignoring, the one that I thought was due the last week of class? Well, it turns out it's going to be due NEXT FUCKING MONDAY!!! Wow. On top of that, the business plan is over 10,000 words now, and there's still *plenty* to be written. And edited. It looks like I won't be seeing Longwave this Tuesday after all.... :-(

Guess what I'm listening to now? Transatlanticism, the new Death Cab for Cutie album due out in three months time! Soulseek is the mother load! Oh. So. Good. I love internet leaks.
BTW, the business plan is starting to get out of control. It's growing like, uh, something that's growing really fast. That, combined with the Moxie's advertising plan and the Junta Reunion Tour 2003 pack, is keeping me up until all hours. I fell asleep while reading something tonight. Twice. This isn't good. I've got Orgazmo and Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter downloaded and I doubt I'll be able to watch them until August. This blows. But Death Cab good so I'm good. No Radiohead, No Spoon
It looks like I won't be going to Radiohead after all. Like I mentioned earlier, Mary Lou Lord will be playing Bumbershoot on the Labour Day weekend, and she'll be doing *three* sets: one on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. This, of course, means I'll be there for the entire weekend, although I'm not sure if I'll go down on the Friday. If I do, I'll get to see Quasi, The Shins, The Decemberists, Kim Richey (if she doesn't overlap with Quasi or The Shins), and probably some other cool bands. If I don't, I'll save $5 US on my ticket as well as the (cheap-ass-but-still-significant) price to stay the night.
Now, regardless of whether I go down on Friday, I'll be down for Saturday and thus miss Thom and the lads from Radiohead. Now, you might be asking yourself, whey doesn't he just skip *one* of *three* sets that this Mary Lou Lord is going to do and check out what will be the coolest Vancouver stadium show of the year? Well, for one thing, we're talking about Mary Lou Lord. *The* Mary Lou Lord, the angelic-voiced victim of psychotic Courtney Love's rage, the one that I've been dying to see for years and years. And also, if I go to Radiohead, I'll be skipping Friday for sure, missing out on those bands I've listed above as well as the rest of the acts I'll be checking out on Saturday, including the likes of Kathleen Edwards, The Dandy Warhols, and The Pale. I guess going to Radiohead is not out of the question, but it seems highly unlikely now. I mean, I'd save another night of staying in Seattle *and* $20 US in ticket savings, but then I'd have to buy a ticket for Radiohead, which will be close to $60. Still though, it's Radiohead, right? Oh the dilemma. And then I'll remember that I'll be seeing Mary Lou, and it all becomes clear.
See, if they played Vancouver on Sunday, it'd be a different story. For one thing, Mary Lou has an early set that day, so it'd be possible for me to see her, and then drive back to Vancouver for Radiohead. All I would be missing on Sunday are Rhett Miller, Matt Nathanson, and Letters to Cleo and Veruca Salt alum Stacey Jone's newish band, American Hi-Fi, so no biggie. Too bad, eh? Some things just aren't meant to be, i.e. no $45 t-shirts for me :-(
Anyway, speaking of disappointment, I won't be going to Spoon tonight, nor would I be attending the Bye Bye Priscilla get-together. My grandparents, uncle, and aunt are in town, and we're going out for dinner tonight. That, combined with the fact that it's an early show, basically rules me out. Well, I guess I'll just have to work my ass off on the business plan tonight instead!

Out of Reality, Into Reality TV
I took a little break from writing tonight and did some Reality TV watching. Seriously, I was flipping through the channels at 8 tonight, and on the main stations were Dog Eat Dog (special [unattractive] NFL cheerleader edition), America's Next Top Model (recap episode), American Juniors, and the debut of Big Brother 4: eX-Factor. TV-land, meet summertime.
So, I did a bit of flipping, but settled for Big Brother 4. The big twist this time is that among the first batch of 8 house guests, 5 of them would be joined by their ex's, making a total of 13 housemates. Judging from their reaction when the secret was revealed, they must've had some pretty nasty break-ups! That'll learn them, going around doing shit and burning bridges.
Anyway, I've never actually watched that much Big Brother before. I caught the first few episodes of the third edition, but I haven't seen the first two. This one seems interesting, and if I can spare the time, I might actually keep up. Why? I will give the following 3 reasons (yes, I'm an anal-retentive writer [Sports Night shout-out!]):
1) A couple of them (Aly and Erika) are quite fetching, in a ditzy sorta way.
2) The twist could cause some real ruckus. Yay ruckus!
3) Plenty to shake my head at. There's a couple of Koreans, and (at least) one of them, Jun, is the stereotypical Americanized Asian. Ugh.
Everybody seem to be in their early 20s to their early 30s, all except for this one old guy. It's actually kind of creepy since the dude, Jack, is pushing 60! He could easily be these guys' fathers! I sure hope he doesn't hook up with one of the girls (or guys), cos that would just be nasty. I'll give the show a couple of eps to see if I'll stick around.
After BB, I took in the only show during the summer that I'm devoted to: Last Comic Standing This show is great. It puts a bunch of stand up comics in a house a la Big Brother, and each week, two of them battle in front of a live audience to see who gets booted off. The last comic standing gets a special on Comedy Central as well as a development deal with NBC. Since they're comics, everyone on the show is funny (to some degree), and the politics is in'neresting as well. The one I'm cheering for is Ralphie May, a big wigga whom I saw open for Jon Lovitz in LA. Hehe.... he is fucking brilliant, but he had to tone his act down for network TV. Still, he's one funny dude, and I hope he goes all the way.
Tonight's final elimination battle was Rob Cantrell vs. Ralphie. Everyone was ganging up on Dat Phan, the resident Asian-by-way-of-Vietnam (he does stats break-downs for his sets.. *sigh*... way to enforce the stereotype!), but since he got immunity by winning the pitch-a-show-idea contest, he was safe and couldn't be challenged. That left a group that all liked each other, and everyone ended up voting for Rob. It was up to him to pick a challenger to duel in a comic standoff, and instead of taking the easy way out by challenging a weaker comic like Tess, he took on the biggest and funniest dog, Ralphie. He lost by a wide margin, but it took balls for him to do that. Mad props, Rob! I'm sad to see him go cos he was funny in a subtle and quirky way. Thems be the breaks, I suppose.
Anyway, during the show, I did what I did every week: occasionally flip to UPN for glimpses of America's Next Top Model. I wouldn't exactly call it a guilty pleasure because I don't feel guilty about liking it cos it's actually got quite a pull! In fact, I might've been tuning regularly if it weren't for Last Comic Standing. The premise of the show was to find a supermodel out of a group of women, and tonight was the finale. They put them up in an apartment, have them do modelling things, and whittle them down to one. The cattiness was at its peak for any reality show that I've seen, and it's great! Oh, and did I mention they had some pretty hot girls too? In particular, I was enamoured with Elyse the atheist and Adrianne the cute brunette, the latter ended up going all the way. No complaints; she is, according to her bio on the UPN website, into Buffy and Lord of the Rings, and in an earlier episode, she got drunk and kept quoting Jay and Silent Bob. Cool chick! Elyse is cool too cos her bio says she's into indie rock and she quotes Perutz. Plus she was the one that caught my eye in the first place and kept me from changing the channel. I guess you can call it a little innocent crush :-)
So yeah, didn't get a lot done today. Wrote a couple of questions, and did a bit of the business plan too. I suppose I deserved this mini-break...

Ya!! Mary Lou Lord is scheduled to play Bumbershoot this year! My plan of not getting Radiohead tickets has paid off, even though it might've cost me a spot in "The Zone" if I do end up going. But this is Mary Lou Lord, baby, the inspiration for the name of my blog, the only all-time fav of mine that I haven't seen live (bands that are no longer together don't count). Potentially being a little further away from Thom, Jonny, Colin, Ed and drummer-whose-name-escapes-me is a small price to pay for a chance to see Mary Lou in the flesh. Mary Lou!!!!!!!! Kathleen Edwards, Pedro the Lion, The Shins, Wilco, Kim Richey, Rhett Miller, and now Ms. Mary Lou Lord! I'm pumped as fuck!

My Name Is
I understand the irony of someone with a name like Hanson writing about this topic, but it just has to be said. I hope I don't offend too many people too much in the process though ;-)
OK. Most of the English names of people from Hong Kong can be classified into 5 different categories. They are:
a) Regular English Names (e.g. David, Eric, Michael, Christina, etc.);
b) Archaic / Obscure English Names (e.g. Fanny, Gertrude, Bertha, err, Hanson, etc.);
c) Bizarre Names (e.g. Chevy, Prada, Action, Earwig, etc.);
d) "Made Up" or Non-English-Word Names (e.g. Dello, Genio, Cinora, Caryophy, etc.); and
e) Vivien
Obviously, a) and b) aren't surprises, and e) is just a (funny and true) joke, but it's c) and d) that I want to talk about. When it comes to mind-boggling names, nobody comes close to people from Hong Kong. We disproportionately take words that are not normally used as first names and slap it on our kids or ourselves. If that doesn't suffice, we can even make up new words or take words from technical vocabulary and foreign languages to use as names! It's kind of like the naming of Japanese bands. Smap and Glay weren't words until those bands came along! Being named Hanson is, at times, challenging enough, but imagine having to go through life as Chevy or Action? Or how 'bout this conversation:
"What's your name?"
"I'm Prada."
"No, not your clothes, your name?"
"Prada."
"Your name, not your clothes' brand name. Don't you speak English?"
Why would people inflict that on themselves or their loved ones? Getting people to spell Hanson right is hard enough, and that's not even a made-up word! Sheesh.
The new trend now is to use foreign names, namely Japanese ones. The next time you see people with names like Hikaru Chan or Yoshiko Wong, don't get your cultural identifications mixed up; just know that they're probably from Hong Kong.
