One More and We Can Form A Band

I found out something quite bizarre yesterday. Apparently, there is *another* Hanson at SFU! ..... Yeah! My feelings exactly. This other Hanson, a white dude, used to be in Computing Science but is now in Business (or so the rumour goes). Somebody I was chatting with yesterday thought I was that guy, thinking there couldn't possibility be another one with that name at SFU (doing compsci and/or business, no less!). Well guess what? I'm not so unique after all!

Now, if only there were another Computing / Marketing double major with a minor in Canadian Studies....

I Would Die To Write As Good As This

"i'll be the platform shoes
undo what heredity’s done to you
you won't have to strain
to look into my eyes
i'll be your winter coat
that buttons straight to the throat
with a collar up
so you won't catch a cold

i want to take you far
from the civics in this town
and kiss you on the mouth
we’ll cut our bodies free
from the tethers of this scene
start a brand new colony
where everything will change
we'll give ourselves new names
identities erased
the sun will heat the grounds
under rock and feet
in this brand new colony
in this brand new colony"

- Ben Gibbard

Add in some more words, a kick-ass melody, and sprinkle on a few beeps here and there, and you get the perfect electro-pop song. This man's a fucking genius.

Slean and Choc

See, that’s funny because Sarah Slean’s parents own a chocolate shop! See!! Funny!!

Hehe… since I'm stuck at home working on this 40% presentation on the tree planting industry in the Cariboo Forestry Region, I might as well blog, eh?

Sooooo, like I was saying before, I went to the Bluebird North show at Richard's on Thursday night. I met Nicole and Terry there, so that means it's another show I don't have to enjoy alone. I'm now 6 for 6 in that department in the calendar year of 2003, so yea me!

Anyway, the set up for the show was weird. 4 musicians sat on stools on stage, and they each took turns playing songs (they each got 3). After the first 4 were done, there was a small break, followed by the next four. Last night, the first group consisted of Shari Ulrich (some oldish broad), Neil Osborne (of 54-40), Bill Henderson (formerly of Chiliwack), and Damhnait Doyle (singer-songwriter from The Rock).

I didn't really enjoy their set that much, although the story Damhnait told was eerily creepy. It turns out that she, Tara MacLean, and Kim Stockwood were working on an album together. Last year, Damnhait had Tara and her sister over, and she played them a song about a girl being killed in a car accident. Three weeks after that, Tara's sister was killed in a car accident, and much of what was described in the song actually happened in real life. It was both sad and weird....

Anyway, after the break, the four that came on were Sarah Slean (whom I came to see specifically), Danny Michel (whom I meant to see the last time he was here), Choclair (the rapper whom I was looking forward to seeing), and some bloke that I didn't care about.

Sarah, by far, got the biggest pop from the audience. After every song, loud cheers erupted, and plenty of that came from me. She played Book Smart Street Stupid, Everything by the Gallon (about Judy Garland), and Sweet Ones (the single). It was fucking awesome (as usual).

Danny Michel was damn good too, playing his brand of folky pop songs. He was hilarious throughout the night, making comments about how difficult it was to follow Sarah.

And Choclair. Ooooo. He was a revelation. He did 3 songs that I didn't know (duh!), and they sounded pretty damn cool with Danny and Sarah backing'm up with guitar and keys. He was funny too, and he even invited Snow on stage to do a number.

That's right! Canadian White-ass Reggae star, the Informer himself, Snow! He did a song by himself (the musicians on stage backed him up), and it was great! Not musically, perhaps, but you had to be there. Hehe... Snow....

So, when the show was over, I hung around a bit. I even exchanged a few words with Sarah herself! She told me she liked my Bright Eyes t-shirt, but I was so nervous, all I could do was smile and nod. I AM SUCH AN IDIOT!!! I could've at least offered up something like "oh, you like Bright Eyes too?," but noooooo! Fuck... this shyness thing blows balls!

Anyway, I walked out of there with another Slean t-shirt. That make three :-)

Ahh!!!!!

Ah!!!!! Death Cab tickets for their show in Seattle on the 28th have sold out!!! Damn!!!! The silver lining in this story is that this means I get to sleep more on that night, which will be good since I'll be shooting guns the next day: that's right kiddies, real guns. I've signed up to do some shooting out at a range with a bunch of other people from school, and the rest should do me good.

In other, non-gatt news, I'll have an opportunity tonight to see Choclair, Canadian Rapper Extraordinnaire! Hehe.... I'm going to see Sarah Slean at Richard's tonight who's part of this SOCAN sponsored Bluebird North tour thing, and Choclair, among other people, will be on the same bill. It should be, uh, interesting. Of course, all the cool hip-hoppers will be at the Roots show tonight, so the crowd "representin'" shouldn't be that big. It'll be the first time I've seen live hip-hop since the Stinkmitts at NMW, and I'll definitely write more once I get back from the show!

The Beauty of the Rain

I picked up Dar's new one downtown today called The Beauty of the Rain. I tried to get it before class on Tuesday but the A&B Sound in Coquitlam didn't have it in. In fact, the music clerks there haven't even heard of her!! I mean, it's Dar-Frikkin-Williams people, just about the biggest name in contemporary American poppy-folk there is! Well, save for Ani, of course, or maybe the Indigo Girls, but you know what I mean!

I listened to it on my bus ride back, and it's ok. It's not as immediately catchy like The End of the Summer or The Green World, and I think I need a few more spins to see how it stacks up against the rest of Dar's discography. She'll be playing Boston on the Saturday I'll be there for TRASHionals, so who knows! Maybe I'll get to see her again!

Oh yeah. While I was at A&B today, I also picked up Kathleen Edwards' Failer. It's on sale for $9.99, so I couldn't resist! It should be a good album, that, and I'm looking forward to it once I finish digging into this latest slice of Dar. Mmmmm..... poppy folk......

Did I Just Read What I Think I Read?

Finished reading Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus a couple days ago. I had attempted to read it last year, but gave up after a few pages because it read like Greek written in Korean. Last month, I stumbled upon some commentary/critique on/about it, so I decided to give it another whirl. This time, I ran through it like a hot knife through seal blubber and finished it within the span of 24 hours.

I *think* I get it, at least superficially, but that got me thinking: did I actually get the meaning from the text itself or did I just mentally superimpose what I read *about* it to what I actually read *from* it? It also doesn't help that I agree (at least partially) with what it said; have I read it in such a way that I *made* it fit with my mental schema? The text itself is rather confusing in terms of its construction, and it sometimes read like lecture notes. I dunno... perhaps I'm just doubting my ability to comprehend.

Right now, I'm part way through Mill's Utilitarianism. Damn they wrote in long sentences back then! And I thought *I* rambled on!

It's Been Let Go

*sigh*

Mary Lou Lord and Rilo Kiley will be playing Seattle on Thursday, and I won't be there to see either of them. Mary Lou FUCKING Lord. The artist responsible for the BRILLIANT Mary Lou Lord EP!!! The inspiration for the name of this blog!!! A not-insane girl who (allegedly) shared fluids with Kurt Cobain!!! An indie hero (in my eyes)!!! A musical Top-Fiver of mine!!! This is first time she'll be playing the Northwest in two and a half years and I won't be there. Waaaaaaaah!!!

*sigh*

I'm disappointed at not seeing Jenny, Blake, and the rest of the Rilo Kiley crew, but my missing Mary Lou is simply inexcusable. It's been, what, almost six years that I've wanted to hear her sing live, and now that she's a stone's throw away from me, I won't be there to cheer her on at UW?

*sigh*

I hope Ben Kweller can dull the pain. Just a little.

Folder or Wadder/Scruncher?

OK. Most people that know me know I have a morbid fascination with crap (one crack about my music and I will smack you in the mouth... I'm Neil Diamond!). Whether it be Gaudy artwork or movies/jokes that are just really, really bad (think Battlefield Earth), I "like" them, in a bizarre, I-don't-"like"-it-like-it sort of way.

However, this post is *actually* about crap. You see, I had a discussion last week about the "clean up" process of human feces excretion. Two paradigms were brought up: folding and scrunching/wadding (do I have to explain further?). I am firmly in the former camp, and I find the latter wasteful and incomplete. So, I was saying my way was better, but was rebutted (pun intended) because they claimed I had to "go deeper" to get the job done. I countered by saying they couldn't do a proper job otherwise. Mini debate ensued.

Now, my question is: are YOU a folder or wadder? Oh come on; don't be embarrassed! Feel free to use the appropriately named "Poop Shoot" functionality of the blog to comment:-)

Oh yeah. On a completely different note, I finally got my grubby (figuratively speaking) hands on the covers of Michael Jackson's Thriller and Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Ben Gibbard did at the Croc (Seattle club) last summer. Friggin' unbelievably wicked stuff.

Anyway, let me know the, uhm, shi-zit!

Riding the Cycle

The last few days has been busy, but in a fun-and-not-work sorta way. Contrast that to the few days just prior to that, which were work-and-not-fun. Funny how these things go in cycles!

On Friday, we went to this Korean karaoke place near my house. Hehe... their song selection wasn't the greatest, but we managed to do most of their Oasis and Radiohead catalogue. The best part, though, was doing all the crappy songs. I personally ran through renditions of Oops, I Did It Again (Britney), How You Remind Me (Nickleback), Bulls on Parade (Rage Against the Machine), and Dirrty (Christina Ag). Hehe... I didn't even know the last two, but screaming along was just plain fun. By the end of the song, I think I figured out the chorus of Dirrty too. It's a shame they didn't have the Redman part! I even covered Avril Lavigne's Complicated, which was digital-camera-taped. It's a good thing no one will ever seen it ;-)

Anyway, on Saturday, our team placed second at the 2003 Northwest NAQT that we hosted, losing out to UBC (grrrr) in a one-game final. On a team with Carlos, Ross, and Joanne (whom I roped into coming at the last minute), we cruised to a 10-2 record in the round robin. I had previously talked Joanne into helping out with staffing, but when we found out we had enough people doing that, we had her play instead. It was Joanne's first quiz bowl experience, and she did damn good despite that, even getting a toss up! Could she be the biology major that SFU QB has been looking for since the beginning of time? We'll see.

On a personal note, I didn't think I played very well, and I blame that squarely on the fact that I was up till 3:30 the night before playing Go with my brother. That directly led to, IMO, my blanking on a friggin' Army of Darkness toss up in the finals. On the ensuing bonus, UBC picked up a 30, which swung the game right their way. Do I blame myself for our lost? A little tiny bit. Regardless, we're going to Nationals at UCLA because we hosted. Hehe... while in LA, we might get a chance to visit the WB lot, so I could perhaps see me some Gilmore Girls shi-zit! Woohoo! I wanna see Luke's!

And on Sunday, I slept in till noon and hung out with Wing Kee and Ricardo the rest of the day. Wing Kee's visiting from HK for a couple weeks, so we hung out old-school, just like the old days (2002 represent, beeyatch!). Picked me up a couple CDs too (Dirtmitts and The Weekend), so it was a rewarding day. I was even nice enough to extended-loan Wing Kee some CDs (Elliott Smith, Splendid, and a few others). And if you were wondering: yes, those are the ones that I have two copies of. But, dude, that copy of Emm's Original Leap Year is yours!

Fuck Christmas!

No, not literally, though I'm sure some sick bastard out there has some Santa pr0n. ANYway....

Chinese New Years rocks. Screw gifts; I want cold, hard cash. More money to finance my music habit is a good thing. Things that my 'lai-see' may go towards:

$ Pavement - Slanted and Echanted deluxe re-issue
$ Ladytron - 604
$ Dirtmitts - Get On
$ Rhett Miller - The Instigator
$ Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
$ some Heavenly / Marine Research
$ some Lush
$ some Dress Bessy
$ Sinking Ships - Out of Key Harmony
$ Tix for Ladytron and the Blue Bird North Show (feat. Sarah Slean)
$ Postal Service - (both the single and the full album)

And if I'm really in a spending mood, I could finance a trip to Seattle to see Mary Lou Lord on Feb 13th! (Rilo Kiley's playing on the same day too!) Failing that, Ben Kweller is plan B.

I'm a Rock n' Roll Staaaaaah

Slightly exagerated, I know, but my BUS 344 and I were featured in tonight's Venture, a show on the CBC. We had a discussion on music downloading, its marketing implications, etc., and the Venture crew taped us while we gabbed. Yes, the thing was staged, but we didn't know what we would be talking about until the day of filming.

For my part, they aired two of my comments; so yeah, that meant two close-ups of the Ho. I also shook my head in disagreement when asked if I had ripped any CDs before. Artist support in da hiz-house!! Hehe... exciting stuff, at least for an attention whore like myself. I had the coolest comment about still buying 7-inches, but they didn't use it, instead choosing to show me talking about "why would people buy when they can download for free?" and some stuff about "value-added products" like bonus DVDs and cool record covers.

Ah well. At least I got air-time on the Mothership and was seen by thousands across this frozen land of ours! Hell, I'm on the same level as that asshole Combover Strachan now! Sort of.
